Week 1 – Week Ending 14/10/01

In today’s newsletter (14/10/01) I will be reviewing previous cd listings as the author at the time of the previous print was going through some hard times.

Music Reviews

For this part of the newsletter I will be reviewing on six LP albums. When I’m referring to an LP album I mean an ordinary album that you purchase in the shops. The albums are:

10 Things I Hate About You – Soundtrack            Hollywood Records            15.99 HMV, Belfast

Empire Records – Soundtrack                        A&M Records                        10.99 HMV, Belfast

Linkin Park                                                       WB                              13.99 HMV, Belfast

Jack Off Jill                                                      Risk Records                N/A

Dead Kennedys                                                Cherry Red Records            N/A

Papa Roach                                                      Dreamwork Records    11.99 HMV, Belfast

NB: All album purchases come from HMV in Belfast, Northern Ireland and prices of the albums where at time of purchase except for The Beavis And Butt-Head Experience which was purchased at Stacks Book Shop on Comber Road, Dundonald, Northern Ireland.

10 Things I Hate About You                                                                              47:59

This movie is typically your teenage love story type of thing but yet again I cannot really comment on movies, as I never know what the storyline is about even if it has one. Maybe you are wondering why does movies have a connection with this album? Well the truth in the matter is, this album is actually from the movie with the same title funny, as it seems. In case anyone is interested in this movie and need to know the actors and actresses name and director then here it goes. Julia Stiles, Heath Ledger, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Larisa Oleynik, Larry Miller, Andrew Keegan, David Krumholtz and Susan May Pratt.    The movie was produced by Andrew Lazar, Written by Karen McCullah Lutz & Kirsten Smith and Directed by Gil Junger.

The bands who made this average album up were: Letters To Cleo, Semisonic, Save Ferris, Sister Hazel, Jessica Riddle, Leroy, Ta-Gana, George Clinton, Brick, Joan Armatrading, The Cardigans, Madness and a Instrumental by Richard Gibbs.

Final Verdict: The album to me seemed pretty lame but had some good things to it. This is a personal opinion coming from me so please do not be put off by my review. I have never heard of Letters To Cleo before but coming from a pop/rock genre they actually adapt into the soundtrack very nicely. Please note I do not know much about Letters To Cleo so the genre might be wrong. Other bands that I could say I have a strong liking to are: Save Ferris, Sister Hazel, Jessica Riddle and Joan Armatrading. The negative opinions are aimed against Leroy, George Clinton, Brick, Madness and The Cardigans. I think The Cardigans made a very weak effort with this single as I know for a fact that they can do much better and this single was very disappointing coming from a band like this. What else can I add about the album? The album seems to have a romance theme to it. What does that mean? That means all the tracks on the album seem to be love songs. If you purchase the album and I am wrong then I am sorry for mistakes that I made and I should actually research more on the topic matters. Back to the review again for 15.99 Sterling Pounds and the 14 tracks, which only last for 47 minutes and 59 seconds, I think you should think about your money before purchasing, as I only really like six songs. OK now I will close this review with a point rating out of 10.

No value for money, disappointing duration, some poor efforts from good bands, not a must have for soundtrack fans. I will give this review 5/10.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Empire Records                                                                                              53:50

Yet again another soundtrack but this time I could say I am much happier with this soundtrack. Why? This soundtrack seems more appealing because firstly it has 16 tracks and the duration of the album is longer than 47 minutes and 59 seconds. So how long is the duration for this album? Duration on third check was 53 minutes and 50 seconds.

It is time for the castlist and direction of the movie. The cast include: Anthony LaPaglia, Maxwell Caulfield, Debi Mazar, Rory Cochrane, Johnny Whitworth, Robin Tunney, Rene Zellweger and Liv Tyler. Produced by Arnon Milchan and Michael Nathanson, Written by Carol Heikkinen and the most important person of all is Director Allan Moyle.

Artists who contributed to this album where: Gin Blossoms, The Cranberries. Edwyn Collins, The Martinis, Toad The Wet Sprocket, The Innocence Mission, Better Than Ezra, Ape Hangers, Cracker, The Meices, Drill, Lustre, Please, Evan Dando, Coyote Shivers and The Cruel Sea.

Final Verdict: I cannot believe out of the 16 tracks that accompany this album that I actually like 11 of them. Also about the tracks I was unsure about 4 of them and there was an out and out no for me and that was track 11.             The tracks which I was undecided about where: Track 3, 5,6 and 13.Who where the artists and what were the tracks called? The partners in the crime ring where: Edwyn Collins with A Girl Like You, Toad The Wet Sprocket with Crazy Life, The Innocence Mission with Bright As Yellow and Evan Dando with The Ballad of El Goodo.

I say this is a good album and I would also add that it is value for money but yet again it’s your choice in wanting to make the purchase. 11 out of 16 tracks a good score. 7/10.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Linkin Park – Hybrid Theory                                                                                    36:26

Where can I begin with this review? Maybe I should tell you how many tracks the album has and the track listings. Ok I am going to give you the track listings and also to say is it value for money or is it a pile of garbage.

Out of the 12 tracks on this album there is three very noticeable tracks which are called One Step Closer, Crawling and In The End. Those tracks have been in the UK Top 40 within the last year or so. In The End is currently in the UK Top 40 but I cannot recall what position they are.

Papercut

One Step Closer

With You

Points Of Authority

Crawling

Runaway

By Myself

In The End

A Place For My Head

Forgotten

Cure For The Itch

Pushing Me Away

Final Verdict: In case there is any young readers out there this band falls into the genre rock and can be purchase in Virgin, Our Price or HMV. I am not one hundred percent with Our Price but MHV and Virgin should definitely have the album. All the tracks on this album sound good but at this very moment I cannot really handpick a favourite but I will say what ones I do like anyway. They are Papercut, One Step Closer, Crawling, Runaway and In The End.

If you are into this sort of music then maybe you would not care about the duration of the album but I personally think 36 minutes and 26 seconds is too short for a metal album and paying 13.99 Sterling Pounds is a bit steep but that is me personally speaking. Value for money albums would be the likes of JBT and Spiderbait. Sorry do not hold me against my word on Spiderbait, as I am not sure how long they last for. JBT is definitely value for me. How did JBT managed to get mentioned in a Linkin Park review and who are they? JBT got mentioned in the review because I was referring to value for money and JBT is a very good band from Australia. There is lots of meaning to the songs and even though some of his albums are only 10 tracks long good value for money. Anyway enough about JBT.

The album is good but it is too short but I still like having it in my collection. 7/10

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jack Off Jill – Covetous Creature                                                                                 44:40

I can’t really be negative towards this band but the first time I listened to this album I was very disappointed with it as the other albums  have been better. There’s nothing really wrong with the original tracks but this album is totally remixed.

American Made “tweaker remix” ~ POD

My Cat “meow mix” ~ Synical

Poor Impulse Control “no control” ~ Synical

Girlscout “Sunday mix” ~Wallace of Switchblade Symphony with Enemies

C*mdumpster “delusional cannibal mix” ~ Agent Moulder &Synical

My Cat “automatic speed mix” ~Shai De La Luna of Lords of Acid

Poor Impulse Control “750 degrees of separation mix” ~ Morphic Field

Despite having 7 tracks on the album I think the duration of the album is ok but yet again it is very disappointing when purchasing an album and then finding out it was a total remix album.

Final Verdict: JOJ are a good band but this remix album didn’t do anything for them but they still deliver the goods in the lyric region. 6/10

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dead Kennedys – Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables 2CDS                          46:06

A very quick album to listen to and if you stop to think for one minute then there would be a very good chance you would miss some off the lyrics so it’s not good by those means. I would really like to give this a 10 but no review is getting a 10 unless I’m totally satisfied with it.

CD1

Kill The Poor

Forward To Death

When Ya Get Drafted

Let’s Lynch The Landlord

Drug Me

Your Emotions

Chemical Warfare

California Uber Alles

I Kill Children

Stealing People’s Mail

Funland At The Beach

Ill In The Head

Holiday In Cambodia

Viva Las Vegas

CD2

Holiday In Cambodia

Police Truck

Kill The Poor

In-Sight

Too Drunk To F**k

The Prey

Final Verdict: It’s a good album but there are some minor faults in the album as the artist are barely understandable, the songs are too short and the duration of the album is a let down as well. Value for money now that’s reasonably good but no album is going to get a good review if it has any similarities with this. 6/10

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Papa Roach – Infest                                                                                                  31:05

This album has the favourite singles in it and those singles are Last Resort and Between Angels and Insects.

Infest

Last Resort

Broken Home

Dead Cell

Between Angels and Insects

Blood Brothers

Revenge

Snakes

Never Enough

Binge

Thrown Away

Legacy

Dead Cell (live)

This album is pretty cool and I would say if you are only starting into the metal genre then maybe you should consider purchasing this album but yet again Papa Roach is nu-metal. Nu-metal is just a term used for the new upcoming bands which are polluting are airwaves.

Final Verdict: I can’t say much about this band except that I think it is a good album but it’s still not worth a 10. 9/10

Now to the review. This game is like any other football managing game and what is that. This is like other games because it still has all the same things except for Ultimate Soccer Manager 2 which you had to do everything. There isn’t really a point in purchasing a game like this but yet again I am doing a review on it and I actually own it. So why do I have all these negative thoughts towards the game? I don’t mean to have negativeness towards this game but if you were a football fan you would know what I am talking about.

Final Verdict: It lacks in commentary, updated transfers are here and that’s really it. The only thing, which I thought was better in this game, was the actual in game showing of games. 4/10
